Checking IP Address of website

How do I know what my domain name is replying back as?

In certain situations its very important that you are able to ping your site and see what is going on. For example, say your ISP is pointing you to a certain IP. However, your hosting provider has your domain resolving to another.

There are a couple of ways to troubleshoot such an event. Please follow the steps below to verify that your domain (from the internet and from your home) is pointing to the correct IP.

Home / Office Verification:

  1. Please go to “Start”
  2. Please click on “Run”
  3. Type in “CMD” and a black window should appear
  4. *Now type the following: “ping yourdomain.com”
  5. You should get a reply something like this:

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Network Administrator>ping yourdomain.com

Pinging yourdomain.com [216.109.112.135] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 63.66.132.10: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=51

Reply from 63.66.132.10: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=51

  1. Now we have completed Home / Office Verification!

* Please nte that yourdomain.com should be replaced ith the domain that you are currently hosting at O2Link.

Internet Verification:

  1. You may use the following site to do so:  http://www.dnsstuff.com
  2. On the left hand side you will find a field that states “Ping”.
  3. In the field you may enter a hostname (such as yahoo.com/)
  4. It should provide you with a reply to your request (like the one provided below).
              Pinging yourdomain.com [63.66.132.10]:x

Ping #3: Got reply from 63.66.132.10 in 78ms [TTL=57]
Ping #4: Got reply from 63.66.132.10 in 79ms [TTL=57]
Variation:              0.2ms (+/- 0%)
Shortest Time:          78ms
Average:                78ms
Longest Time:          79ms
Done pinging yourdomain.com!
The final step is to compare both of the results the one from “Internet Verification”
and “Home Verification”, If they both match then there should be no problem.
However, if they don’t match then you will need to further investigate why.
An example of how they should be is below:
Home / Office Verification:
Reply from 63.66.132.10: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=51
Internet Verification:
Ping #1: Got reply from 63.66.132.10 in 78ms [TTL=57]
If the above don’t match after 72 hours (DNS propagation time) then you will need to
contact your ISP and enquire why this is change hasn’t taken effect. A reason why this
may have not taken place is because some ISP’s cache the records for x amount of days
to prevent more bandwidth usage.
